William, have you consulted with John Rogers of Value for People before?
No, but I am aware of his work. The Common Good Bank system of creating money locally is much simpler and easier than any existing local currency system.
I got this link from Ryan and his Within Reach Movie project partnership with our CGB project. I'm starting to use our local "Greenbacks" currency and it doesn't flow farther than one transaction. It's also tedious to cash in my US dollars for it. I'm trying to encourage businesses to make it flow longer before ending up at the bank and being thrown away. I was told by the Chamber that they have to order a special paper to print them on too. What a waste if it only has one time use.
Yes, that is a typical challenge for local currencies. Our Common Good Bank plan bypasses the problem entirely by making the locally created money automatically exchangable for official currency, so no management is required.
Do you know how the Common Good Dollars will work? Can a local division have input into the design or name of the local currency that the CGB will use?
Any Common Good Bank community can create its own local currency, but Common Good Bank itself will probably not create a physical currency (except possibly as a service to local communities). In the Common Good Bank system, any local currency will be elevated to the same status as national currency simply by the Community Division voting to accept deposits of local currency at a certain dollar value.
